Sagra della Castagna

Erve, Italy (Lecco) — Always on the 2nd Sunday of October, according to a nice lady when she informed us that the chestnut roast in her village – La Castagnata – has been held every year since she was a little girl.  If I am to judge by the incredible meal we enjoyed this afternoon, 2006 was a good one for chestnuts – what a feast!  The castagnata commenced at noon and had us working up an appetite over the enticing aroma and popping sounds of fire-roasted chestnuts, pale yellow polenta being cooked in large copper pots, and sausages and ribs on the grill.  We just might go back this evening for dinner and end it all with vin brulé (red wine flavored with spices).
