Sagra della Zucca

Bellano, Italy — Lookout Great Pumpkin, italian chefs might be coming after you with a carving knife next year. Ideal weather and an appetite for the large orange-colored gourd had the locality of Bonzeno breaking a sweat in the kitchen this past weekend. The atmosphere at the Sagra della Zucca was almost Halloween-like, with toothy jack-o-lanterns, great pumpkin contests, loud music, and staff crew donned in orange and black. The wine flowed, beer too, and as with many small neighborhoods that sit high above the northern italian lakes, the view was stunning. Among several pumpkin dishes were gnocchi, ravioli, tarts and fritters – all made to order and definitely made from scratch. It was a long wait since numbered tickets were called up 10 at a time — just our luck to be at the tail end with #213!
