There’s a whole mountain of hurt in our hearts as we process the fact that Maddie, our alpha dog of 15+ years, is no longer with us in the chestnut forest. The tumor (benign) in her bladder had finally grown to the point where it was interfering with normal bodily functions, giving her the sensation of constantly having to pee. She was always in discomfort due to the exertion of trying to relieve herself and therefore was prescribed pain medication by her vet. This helped her to sleep most of the day and night, but when she began refusing water and food, we knew that it was time to end her suffering.
As she was taking her last breaths, a lifetime of memories with our beloved Westie ran through my head. She has been with us on all vacations here in Italy and beyond its borders if it didn’t involve boarding a plane. She liked cats (even if they didn’t like her). She bossed Mister Bentley but if I went anywhere near him with the vacuum cleaner, she’d growl at me. She wasn’t just a pet even if I use the category of pets. She was a family member, a source of comfort and amusement, an absolutely willing travel partner, and above all a good ‘big sister’ to Mister B the dachshund.
I’m sure that after we’ve pulled through the current world crisis, another bouncy, four-legged and waggy-tail member will join our family. We would like the new addition to come from the local kennel. I think Miss Maddie would be rightfully pleased if we welcomed a friend in need to a furever home.
Oh no sweetie that makes me sad! Maddie and Mister B are a bright spot in my heart! So sorry for your loss sweetie!

Thank you so, so much! The first couple days were really hard; the lack of her presence was just….awful. But we will overcome her loss and she will be remembered with us planting a couple of new lavender plants.

Thanks Kat, we (Mister B included 🐶) appreciate your kind words. When we took Maddie to the vet, Mister came along but stayed in the car. After Maddie was put down, MotH brought him in to have a ruptured abcess (in his gums) looked at. I swear, he made a sound like a cross between a wail and a scream as soon as he came into the room. It was so heartbreaking, and even our vet said that he must know that something was clearly very wrong.

Oh Rowena… I am so sorry to read this! I know there is no ”good” timing for sad events like this, but it must be especially hard to go through, with the crisis in Italy… I think about everyday, hoping you and your loved ones are still safe. I’m sending you big big hugs in these difficult times! xx

A huge thanks for your thoughtful message. It is indeed a trying time for all and we try our best to keep a positive outlook as the days go by. We are fine, but there are so many out there that will, or already are, face/facing a hard struggle in the months to follow. I appreciate the hugs!!!!

Thank you for your kind words 🙂 and I agree, they aren’t with us long enough and the time that we do have together simply goes by too quickly.
