Footloose at the Kilauea Lighthouse parking lot

I hope I’m not giving the impression that all parking lots in Hawaii are completely overrun with wild birds but it’s difficult to feel otherwise – especially when there’s a sign instructing visitors not to feed them. On a visit to Kilauea Lighthouse, I saw a lot of these hawaiian nene geese strutting all over the place, totally indifferent to the tourists and birdwatchers (like myself) who zoomed and clicked away on cameras. The aforementioned sign which read, ‘Feeding them is their doom’ (or something to that effect), must be getting the message across because unlike the vagrant roosters and chickens at Walmart, these birds don’t hang around waiting for McDonald’s crumbs. In fact, they’ll pretty much ignore and dismiss your intrusive presence, unendangered human species that we are.
