This is the first I’ve seen or heard of Canistel but have to say that maybe we should all be thankful Eve passed it up for an apple.
The egg fruit is so-called because the consistency is that of a cooked egg yolk. My dad got these off of a tree in a friend’s yard, with the suggestion to look online for ways to use it. Although they should be picked while firm, you eat them only when they have softened, quite like the rules that apply to avocados. The taste? Like a weird combo of sweet potato and dates. It didn’t ring any familiar bells on my palate, and even as I type this I’m not sure where I stand on this fruit.
