I’m not sure how to present the idea of visiting goats and donkeys except that every once in awhile, the prospect of the westie getting to make some “friends” is reason enough to check something out. In the small countryside town of Ardesio (Bergamo), local herdsmen brought all types of even-toed ungulates and stubborn donkeys for the 9th Fair of the Goats (capre) and 7th Fair of the Donkey (asino). It was an occasion for enthusiasts (selling, buying, or just plain looking) with the possibility of purchasing dairy products from local cheesemakers. I’d say it was a fine example of rural living since most everyone there wore cowboy boots!
The accompanying market had an interesting display of cow bells, cow-milking apparatus, feeding bottles, boots, butter churners, wooden butter forms, ricotta baskets and the like. Definitely a different feel to the usual mercati that we chance upon. And speaking of feel, even my husband noted that it seemed like an entirely different part of Italy although we live only 90 minutes away.
